What is Yiddish dance?

Yiddish dance describes the traditional folk dances done to Klezmer music (the folk music developed among Ashkenazi Jews in Eastern Europe). Klezmer today reflects centuries of cultural exchange. Stemming from roots in Ashkenazi Jewish musical modes and expressive sensibilities, Klezmer adapted influences from Eastern European, Balkan, and Ottoman music. In recent history, it has even incorporated elements of Jazz and other styles here in America. Klezmer and Yiddish dance hold many stories and rich cultural information that depict just one branch of the Jewish Diaspora, and so beautifully demonstrate moments throughout our history when people of different communities have come together through celebration, music, and dance — so let’s do just that as part of the Foundry Festival!

In Other Eyes, Wen-hao Tien

Galvanized steels, marine plywood, laser engraved on marine plywood, PVC tubes, 4x4x7(h)feet, 400 lb, 202. \This sculpture, In Other Eyes, taking an open book form, records my field work of what people say about their culture, in their own handwriting. My journey in the multicultural USA as an immigrant undoubtedly presented a surmountable challenge but also growth-confusions often followed by understanding. I engraved these passages to form the content of a 7ft tall "book-house” sculpture. Years ago, working with biracial children, 6-y-o Arie, painted a self-portrait with two distinctively different eyes “one eye is from my mother, and the other is from my father”. I often think back: how remarkable that our children can learn to negotiate between cultures. Does culture color our views? What lens do you look through?

Wen-hao Tien is an artist and educator living in Cambridge, MA. Her studio practice is rooted in language and cross-cultural observations. She notices what many do not see, and her multi- disciplinary work, as well as her collaborative work brings out narratives of our changing societies, and life-in-flux.

Ages 9-13

STEAM in the kitchen and beyond! Cambridge Camping provides middle school children (ages 9-13) with an in-person STEAM-centered cooking program through the February school vacation week (Feb 19- Feb 23). Participants will explore the science, technology, engineering, art, and math of cooking. Ingredients and supplies are provided.

Participants will experiment with the properties of baking ingredients to figure out how cookies are made, scientifically produce the perfect soft-boiled egg, and use natural fermentation to make bread and churn butter. These are just some of the experiences middle schoolers will enjoy in this fun-filled (and tasty) week.

Historically portrayed as 'Opus Mulierum' (or ‘work of women’), the weaving of plant and other fibre yielded cloth for such essentials as bandages, burial shrouds, tents, sails, undergarments, and even head wraps. The incorporation of bells and whistles, sometimes literally, further transformed otherwise unremarkable cloth into a panoply of sight and sound often reserved for special occasions such as weddings. The programme begins with the exploration of cloth(ing) from prehistory to modernity, starting with Opomulero, the ancient lineage of cloth makers in present-day Nigeria. The programme continues with "The Science of Fashion" - a series of workshops on the exploration of fabric science and apparel design through hands-on experimentation for learners of all ages.

Children under 12 must participate with a parent/guardian.
